Beatology. Volume 1 - Whetzel [Reviewed by J-Simma] FCCs: None
RIYL: Daedelus, Elaquent, Blockhead, a little Ratatat or El Ten Eleven on some of the melodic parts - (JM) An upbeat beat tape with great balance in instrumentation. Lots of plucked strings (guitar, sitar, etc?) and heavy, bassy drums and basslines. Strings and synths build great melodies that conversate with the basslines to kinda create a story for each track.
Favorite Tracks: 5, 8, 9
1) Reidemeister Moves (3:20) - Heavy bass, off-beat melody with sitar-esque strings
2) My Wife’s Favorite Song (3:52) - Happy, upbeat. Classic hip-hop drum sounds punctuated with staccatoed strings
3) Schrodinger’s Beat (2:28) - Heavy bassline and bassy drums paired w/uplifting strings
4) Space Walkin’ (3:52) - Upbeat, nice chord progression with the strings
**5) Investigator’s Beat (2:34)- more downtempo and balanced, great melodic progressions love the strings on this one
6) First Love (3:08) - Heavy sluggish drum beat and synths, paired with nice sitar-like melody, gives a happy vibe
7) Moving Forward (4:15) - Emphasized string melodies and synths, drums are stripped down to just essentials
**8) The Challenge (2:46) - Great tempo, balance, progression. Love the sitar, gives a lot of flavor
*9) Sunshine in Space (3:26) - Spacey synths/keys alternate with plucked strings w/bassy drums underneath
