RBCHMBRS - Passports EP
Reviewed by Chano
This is a really fun set of experimental-of-center dance songs; kicks and hi hats hold down the rhythm but all types of other samples are woven in through the grooves and create a fun and fluid vibe; I would love for these tunes to come on at a dance party I’m at to help set the mood. Play these tracks for your listeners and enjoy the left-field dance experience.
FCCs: None! No vocals.
Favorites: All! Track 3 is the longest.
RIYL: Drum & bass, house music, footwork, Aphex Twin, Autechre, DJ Earl, DJ Rashad
1. “Passports” - 5:16 - Housey kick drum guides us through a range of interesting glitchy sounds that cut in and out of the mix while the hi-hat and kick drum (and occasional bass pulse) keep it dancey. Fun and weird energetic dance vibes. Song feels like it’s cutting out throughout and adds a dynamic/fun/positively challenging vibe.
2. “Sliced Mango” - 5:25 - interesting sample melody opens it up before the housey hats some in, but rather than straight ahead they’ve got a nice broken up rhythm; cool percussion and slowed down drums come in around 3:43 that adds a nice groovey nuance to the track.
3. “Find The Mood” - 8:44 - drum and bass/jungle vibe; ethereal pads/synths come in and out and interact nicely with the percussion which also starts/stops and gets tweaked out. Drums also get choppy and glitched; nice reverb/echoes add texture to snare/other percussion as the synth comes back in.
