“Cosmic Wink” Jess Williamson
L.A.-based singer-songwriter is back with her third album that takes her in an entirely new direction with more of a full band sound that’s alt-folk or alternative rock with a nod toward psych, compared with the melancholy Texas twang of her past efforts. Although most of the songs are about affairs of the heart, the feeling is more upbeat with a newfound confidence in life’s direction. Most of the songs are guitar-driven, with solid rhythm tracks and synthesizers and other keyboards woven in as needed.

1. (3:25) I See The White — Big strumming guitar. Leisurely rhythm. Laid-back, almost droning vocals. ****
2. (2:41) Awakening Baby — A warm love song washing over you. Even more languorous, almost sleepy with a hint of an island rhythm. Jangly, reverbed guitar. ***
3. (3:47) White Bird — Swingy with a simple chord progression. A bit repetitive, but does build into a bigger psych-y ending.
4. (4:21) Wild Rain — Darker and more deliberate. Sustained synth notes. Halting, pensive vocals. ***
5. (3:36) Thunder Song — Opens with a cappella vocals. Evolves into a pleading, soulful ballad with ringing guitar, swirling synths and march-like snare drum.
6. (5:57) Mama Proud — Chimey guitar. Shuffling rhythm under hypnotizing vocals. ***
7. (4:28) Dream State — Sultry and bluesy psych anthem.
8. (4:51) Forever — Ethereal and dream-like. Throaty guitars. Shimmering synths.
9. (4:16) Love On The Piano — Highly personal and reassured. Mystical feeling. Fingerpicked guitar. Piano. Sweet, vulnerable vocals. ***
