“Weed Garden” Iron & Wine
Samuel Beam has released a six-song EP of tracks that were written for 2017’s “Beast Epic,” but could not be finished in time for that album’s release. The EP is true to Iron & Wine’s honest folk-rock heritage, ranging from an Americana-flavored tune, “Waves of Galveston,” that has been a favorite at Beam’s live performances for years, to intricate chamber-folk, “Milkweed.” All good songs, with at least three that certainly could have earned a place on “Beast Epic.”

Recommended: 1, 4, 6. No FCCs detected.
1. (3:01) What Hurts Worse — Slow beat of tom-toms. Melodic tune featuring acoustic guitar and piano. Melancholy vocals. ****
2. (3:36) Waves Of Galveston — Soft and simple, disarming ballad about a city that has faced more than its share of natural disasters. Fingerpicked guitar. Banjo. Maybe mandolin? Pensive, reverbed vocals.
3. (3:21) Last Of Your Rock ‘n’ Roll Heroes — Rhythmically driven mid-tempo tune. Bouncy and fun, with nice changes of pace. Meanders over the last 45 seconds or so.
4. (3:20) Milkweed — More intricate, layered chamber folk. Rich string parts, plucked and bowed. Piano. Complicated time signature. Nice! ***
5. (3:15) Autumn Town Leaves — Wistful, reassuring ballad. Flowing and beautiful.
6. (3:52) Talking To Fog — Plaintive and peaceful. Fingerpicked guitar, supporting Beam’s throaty vocals. ***
