TORD GUSTAVSEN: The Other Side
ECM, 2018
PIANO TRIO – Gorgeous, emotionally rich music reflecting on the mysteries of death and afterlife, sometimes tragic but mostly has a warm outlook rather than a depressing one. Original pieces, Norwegian hymns, and rearranged Bach chorales with a sense of openness and exploration.
All excellent. Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 12
01. 6:05 – gentle piano/bass flow, drums march softly, gazes beyond the veil
02. 5:13 – hymn starts w/bass & subtle electronics, rocking trio rises up calmly
03. 5:17 – uplifting tune rides a steady midtempo, falls into silence at end
04. 4:37 – quiet mysterious atmosphere with hints of Middle Eastern music
05. 3:54 – hymn: tragic and surging, as the trio sound billows ever larger…
06. 3:15 – a simple, very sad song for piano, bass & soft electronics
07. 4:55 – Bach chorale curiously set against an upbeat drum groove
08. 4:32 – sedate Bach chorale, drifts in from silence, then swirls softly
09. 3:25 – calm but resolute hymnlike melody: straightforward trio interplay
10. 3:34 – amorphous but tragic Bach chorale, boils over, then calms down
11. 2:29 – lovely piano interlude, full of dreamlike mystery
12. 6:20 – gentle ballad, trio is well-balanced and reflective, even romantic
