Review: master drummer White returns with another all-star line-up to perform a stellar set of all originals. Could be called the little big band that could. Lots of beautiful solos intertwine. The second CD is all poetry, which I did not review.
If You Like: Art Blakey, Hubert Laws, JJ Johnson, Oscar Peterson, Dexter Gordon
Track Review (favorites denoted by *):
**1/ Blues for Cousin Alice Childress (6:15) – piano starts> uptempo swinging jam> quick stop
2/ Slow Wednesday In Havana (7:19) – drums start> midtempo jam with Latin vibe> quick stop
*3/ Boppin With Benny Golson (7:04) – drums start> midtempo jam swings uptempo> crescendo end
*4/ Short One For Wayne (7:47) – piano starts> slow tempo builds to midtempo jam> fade
*5/ Minor Adjustment (5:27) – percussion starts> midtempo jam with flute up front> crescendo end
6/ Steppin Fourth With The Art Of Blakey (6:15) – drums start> midtempo jam> crescendo end
