Vide Noir (Black Void) – Lord Huron (as told by Mr. Bones)
Want to take a magic carpet ride without any 'shrooms? Turn down the lights and give Vide Noir a listen. You’ll find it no surprise that the genesis for it came from frontman Ben Schneider's night drives around LA where he looks 'across the twinkling grid of the valley, into the creeping shadows of the foothills, through downtown’s neon canyons and way out to the dark edges of the ocean.' In their 3rd release they morph from the cowboy admiring the beauty of the open plane to the city slicker pondering the ethereal nihilism of the cosmos (as well as the loss of one’s sweetheart.) If you like your Americana with good dose of dreamy pop, synths and fuzzy guitars, give this disk a spin. And don’t fret about picking the right track, the whole damn disk is exquisite.
RIYL: Joy Division, The Cure, Nick Cave, The National
**1 Lost In Time and Space - medium, dreamily sublime story of being left behind by one's SO. (4:45)
**2 Never Ever - fast, spacey rocker with driving bass & Theremin (2:53)
**3 Ancient Names Pt. 1 - fast, story of getting one's fortune told, ala The Cure (6:02)
*4 Ancient Times Pt. 2 – fast, blistering beat puts one back in mosh pit with the Sex Pistols with very interesting ending (2:05)
*5 Wait by the River - slow, mystical doo-wop ballad with nice orchestration (3:11)
*6 Secret of Life - fast, psychedelic pop with dreamy synth & guitar interplay (3:50)
**7 Back From the Edge - medium, eerie tale of returning from dead with Phil Spector like 'wall of sound' but done in minor a key (3:03)
** 8 The Balancers Eye – fast, with spooky feel fueled by driving guitar work (4:29)
** 9 When the Night is Over - slow bluesy ballad contemplating one's drift into insanity along with nice whistling (5:12)
*10 Moonbeam - medium, dream pop story about ones love returning on a moonbeam. (4:19)
**11 Vide Noir - slow, nihilistic with neat sitar work about 'heading into a pure black hole ' (4:30)
12 Emerald Star - medium, dreamy story of meeting again in the cosmos (4:38)
* Mr. Bones especially likes these
