General Comments / Release Notes
In your face, fast frenetic punk/pop with sadness, gender, transitioning (in more than just gender) as central themes. Sonically, lyrically and existentially, this is an important record. Brutally honest and not at all interested in your delicate sensibilities or propriety. Also, just goddamned entertaining as hell. This is what Rock & Rock is for. This is so good, I've edited all the FCCs. Literally every song on this album is spot on.
Bandcamp Release Notes:
“This is our punk record,” says Ezra Furman, introducing his new album Twelve Nudes, yet another incendiary and inspiring classic from the singer/ songwriter/ guitarist / bandleader. “We made it in Oakland, quickly. We drank and smoked. Then we made the loud parts louder. I hurt my voice screaming. This was back in 2018, when things were bad in the world. The songs are naked with nothing to hide.”
Immediate proof is offered by ‘Calm Down’ (aka ‘I Should Not Be Alone’), the album’s insanely catchy opening track and lead single, bound up in a compact two minutes and 22 seconds. “’Calm Down’ is so desperate, and not what I want to say about the world,” says Furman. “I think we curate our reactions to current news because we’re overwhelmed by how bad it is, and I noticed I was suppressing how bad I truly felt. I wanted music that gave me permission to feel how it felt to live in a broken world, which punk rock does.”
FCCs: 1,9,10,11 (Radio Edits Provided)
RIYL: In terms of insistence and sheer power, IDLES, Fontaines DC, Hives, DIrty Water Records, etc... come to mind, but this isn't really like anything.
Play: Everything, but make sure you use the FCC Clean versions: **13,14,15,16**
Tracks:
1. Calm Down aka I Should Not Be Alone 02:22 - FCC "Shit" This song is incredible. Urgent, desperate, angry with woo-woos and everything.
2. ** Evening Prayer aka Justice 02:55 - Nice insistent acoustic power chording at the intro. Furman's scream-sing is fantastic, and one of the best in rock, I think. Mid-uptempo straight ahead rock&roll with razor sharp edges, vocally, musically and lyrically.
3. ** Transition From Nowhere 03:11 - Soft vocal intro of Furman's warbly almost falsetto gives way to the gravel croon quickly. Great song with challenging lyrics.
4. ** Rated R Crusaders 02:16 - Machine gun krauty fuzz guitar. Uptempo, frenetic noisy and great. Goes low-fi and tinny at 1:37, stays that way to the end. Cool track.
5. *** Trauma (03:07) - Like Melvins doing country rock. Epic, chunky power-chords and furious lyrics. More awesome.
6. *** Thermometer (02:05) - Uptempo, Twee-punk anthemic and killer. Who knew the word "Thermometer" was such a great chorus. Reminds me of some of the Japanese girlband stuff, like Otoboke Beaver and Shonen Knife.
7. *** I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend (03:29) - The single. Not the best track on the album. That said, it's a great song, on it's own. Playful, off kilter and very 50's-60's teen love song sounding.
8. ** Blown (00:55) - Brief, noisy, fast, aggressive punk.
9. My Teeth Hurt (02:31) - FCC "Fuck" - Both a song about getting your teeth worked on, also a metaphor for gender dysphoria. Killer song. Too bad about the FCC. Edited below
10. In America (02:10) - FCC "Shit" - Another great tune with an FCC. Edited below.
11. What Can You Do But Rock n Roll (02:33) - FCC "Fuck" - Another killer track. Fast, angry, insistent, punk anthem.
12. **** On Your Own (4:35) - Slow tempo ballad. Very Daniel Johnstonian lyrics. Fuzzed out wailing guitar accompanies Furman's whiskey croon. Anthemic and great.
13. ***** Calm Down aka I Should Not Be Alone 02:22 - RADIO CLEAN EDIT - This song is incredible. Urgent, desperate, angry with woo-woos and everything.
14. **** My Teeth Hurt (02:31) - RADIO CLEAN EDIT - Both a song about getting your teeth worked on, also a metaphor for gender dysphoria. Killer song. Fast, in your face, craveable.
15. **** In America (02:10) - RADIO CLEAN EDIT - Another great anthemic urgent pop punk song.
16. **** What Can You Do But Rock n Roll (02:33) - RADIO CLEAN EDIT - Another killer track. Fast, angry, insistent, punk anthem.
