A masterpiece of dark dramatic unclassifiable heavy music. In the same way later Swans music defied definition (is it heavy? Is it pretty? Sheesh is this Christian music or Satan worshiping?) WH does the same only taking it to a newly evolved level. The core lineup is a duo, the fairer half contributing angelic if twisted vocals (sound familiar?) and strings/violin. The band is a collaboration that could be an entire symphony at times with its power, heavy dark guitars, percussion, members of which have indeed contributed to Swans. The album is conceptual, personal - about pain, loss, yet it has such a beautiful sheen its striking. All songs blend together as such, but no real cold ends. Fans of 4AD, but also of dark doom metal, Earth, Sunn((O))), the strings of These Immortal Souls. I cant decide which song is my favorite and want to just play them all, the whole album and thus I rendered this FCC clean.
1) (7:02) the melodic theme of record appears quickly in stripped piano form but a bend melodic contrast in female vocal accompaniment hints at strangeness to come, male vocs begins the story quickly, somber strings appear and percussion and doom builds slowly serenely, ends with ambience that blends into next 2) (10:33) a ponderous melody and feel from the start on this, multifaceted masterpiece, heavy in places with thunderous percussion 3) (4:36) slow melodic, smacks of World of Skin era Swans in that its almost a childrens song but so so dark 4) (10:21) very dark, guitar centered, more chill and no less somber until later where bombast returns with strange vocal manipulations 5) (8:47) a darkness that permeates yet still melodic, heavy on the strings, heavy on it all, almost spoken word poetry bordering on Nick Cave “I used to feel love”
