In her debut EP, Irie presents an absolutely divine soul-pop sound with near perfect synth accents. While sonically rich, the production does not overwhelm her sensuous voice and introspective lyrics. Although still a teen, she is eminently capable of writing intelligent and captivating coming of age stories that will appeal to young optimists as well as the not so young with a more jaded view of life. Do your listeners a favor and play her before she becomes too popular for college radio.
RIYL: Maggie Rogers, billie Eilish
FCC: #3 (shit at 0:33)
Bitter – powerful delivery & orchestration drive this tune about perseverance under adversity (fast, 3:37)***
Stupid Things – sublime story about a young woman “wanting to find her place” (slow, 3:28)**
The Optimist – soaring coming of age story about ignoring negativity with amazing crescendos (med, 3:54) ***
Vulnerable – stunningly soulful vocals (think Adele) over dreamy piano & violin (slow, 3:18) ***
Sink Swim – driving bass & synths behind this tale of taking chances where she asks “is my music cool or just weird” (fast, 3:01)*
Other Singles:
Worst Enemy – delightful interplay of vocal over piano interleaved with dream y kick drum & synth (single, med, 3:24)***
Over Him – vocoded lyrics over a techno beat (single, fast, 2:49)
