This is EF's first release since coming out as a trans woman and the third of a trilogy of disks that explore the similarities she sees between the persecution of Jews and queer folk. As such, many of the tracks exude an anthemic energy that is amplified by producer John Congleton's raw style accentuated with driving (but not over the top) percussion, bass & synths. Furman deftly uses this energy to complement her captivating stories of the downtrodden rising up against their oppressors.
FCC: 6, 8, 9 (CD is clean)
The Train Comes Through - incredibly powerful anthem to those on society's fringes driven by distorted bass & synths (fast, 4:32)***
Throne - driving percussion, soaring horns & effects (fast, 2:30)*
Dressed In Black - spooky homage to girl group sound of the 60's (med, 3:30)
Forever In Sunset - Springsteen escapist vibe with sublime bass & synths (fast, 4:43)***
Book Of Our Names - power reinterpretation of the Book Of Names into manifesto for queer rights (fast, 3:31)**
Point Me Toward The Real - beautiful French horns & soft harmonies behind luscious vocals about being released from a psychiatric institute.(med, 4:55)*** FCC: 1:46, 3:58
Lilac And Black - soft opening slowly builds in this story of finding power in her queer girl gang (med, 4:25)*
Ally Sheedy In The Breakfast Club - lots of static, skip this (slow, 3:11) FCC: 0:05,
Poor Girl A Long Way From Heaven - conversation with God with chaotic ending ( 3:54, med)* FCC: 0:20, 0:55,
Temple of Broken Dreams - soft & ominous with acoustic guitar & strings (med, 4:44)*
I Saw The Truth Undressing - dreamy but discordant (med, 4:29)
Come Close - vocals over soft piano about finding love on the street (slow, 3:46)
