Lush indie rock with a country twang. This sixth studio album from Asheville singer-songwriter Angel Olson, whose previous releases have gotten quite a bit of play on KZSU. Full of tender songwriting and expertly produced by Jonathan Wilson (of Laurel Canyon revival fame). This release was coupled with a 28-min film, which pairs perfectly with its cinematic atmosphere. All songs FCC Clean.
RIYL: Sharon Van Etten, Jessica Pratt, Weyes Blood, Snail Mail
TRY: 3, 5, 7
(1.) (4:36) Steady galloping country with twinkly percussion. Builds in intensity
(2.) (4:07) Lead single, warm romantic ballad with a big sing-songy chorus. Great slide guitar elements
(*3.) (3:53) Slow, melancholic chamber pop. Varied percussion, sumptuous strings and a bit of organ
(4.) (4:20) Sparse piano ballad with a touch of acoustic guitar. Great vocals
(*5.) (3:37) Breathy vocals. Moving, cinematic love song with gentle piano and sweeping strings
(6.) (5:07) Fiery, acoustic, with lonely echoed piano
(*7.) (6:24) Smooth country rock with excellent vocals
(8.) (5:25) Expertly layered. Piano, horns, and nice varied percussion. Lots of loud/quiet/loud swells
(9.) (4:31) Cinematic with lush strings
(10.) (4:43) Wandering outro. “Chasing the sun” driving music, soundtrack feel, etc.
