Introspective ambient and sparse beats from Mexico City
Hailed from Mexico City, Isaac Soto takes us on a deep, illusory, and introspective journey. The entire album was made with modular synth and recorded using tape, which gave the unique coarse quality of the sounds. Seemingly alluded to by the cover art, which resembles water, the three-track EP takes us on a trek through different watery landscapes - the first track, “Corporal”, is like a crossing of a waterfall. The dense sine waves drown out any attempt to analyze the rhythm, giving the listener an overwhelming, corporal feeling of water beating the skin. The second track, “17 minutos”, is a crawl into the dark caves behind the waterfall. The heavy, bassy rhythm is a mix of steady water-drop from the ceiling of the caves and heartbeat. Occasional high-pitch sound flashes through the darkness like mystical fluorescent creatures. The final track, “Cero”, takes us out of the dark caves to the vast open waters. The waves could be interpreted in the literal sense and evoke soothing, healing feelings.
Picks: 3. FCC clean
1. Corporal (07:48) - Busy, drone, corporal, meditative.
2. 17 minutos (04:52) - Dark, slightly claustrophobic.
3. Cero (06:46) - Calm, soothing, meditative, healing.
