Eerie, gorgeous compositions featuring texturally complex drones (Andrew Weathers plays more than a dozen instruments on this album) and heavily treated recordings of deceased relatives' speech. The speakers, almost playing the role of singers, are the ghosts around which these uneasy, disorienting pieces develop. Weathers is based in Texas and has participated in KZSU's Day of Noise several times, and he's one of the founders and operators of the label Full Spectrum. (See KZSU's library for many of his and Full Spectrum's releases.) RIYL Pauline Oliveros, claire rousay, Lucy Liyou, Robert Ashley, Jon Hassell, Chuck Johnson, Stars of the Lid, Francisco López. Favorites: 1, 2, 5, 7. No FCCs detected.
1. *(12:06)—Clean, minimal electric guitar. Field recordings, processed speech, an intricate tapestry of lovely and slightly unsettling textures.
2. *(3:47)—Down-pitched speaking, bright droning textures, electric piano.
3. (3:12)—Minimal, fragile. Faded recording of speech, muted acoustic guitar plucking.
4. (5:05)—Distant speech buried in surface hiss, ghostly droning textures.
5. *(10:34)—Two speakers recounting UFO visitations. A dissonant drone evolves into something hyperactive, melodic, and Steve Reich–like.
6. (3:35)—Slow acoustic guitar and muffled clarinet.
7. *(7:34)—Heavily distorted speech like a low horn solo or something from an old horror movie. Soft electric guitar, high chiming and whistling tones, buried speech.
