Reasonably thoughtful near-classical stuff from a Finnish composer who died in 1999.
More brash than a lot of "serious" music or ECM-label sessions, because it's got three saxophones up front and a couple of other horns to boot ... but also guitar, harmonica, cello, and accordion showing up in spots.
Sometimes the horns get joyous and even a bit silly; other tracks take a darker, midnight-sun view. Dig the band photo: They're all standing out in the snow, looking gruff and serious, and Vesala (who I presume is in the middle) has a big ol' walrus moustache.
This is one of several albums Vesala did with ECM, dating back to the '70s.
