Lengthy chamber-jazz pieces, 15 to 22 minutes long, each one written for a particular featured instrument. In other words, the base band (flute, trumpet, violins, drums, bass) is joined by a guest star on each track. Pieces have a nice jazzy bounce while retaining that "serious composition" feel -- except maybe when Nels shreds out on #4.

I really liked this CD and treasured having it in rotation in early 2002, but the song lengths precluded it getting much airplay, and maybe my "chamber-jazz" description scared away some of the more adventurous, noise-oriented DJs. It's a gem of an album.

1- with TOM VARNER, FRENCH HORN: Perky chamber jazz, strident feel

2- with MARK DRESSER, BASS: Mostly sparse, quiet. Opens with heavy bass sawing.

3- with VINNY GOLIA, SOPRANO SAX: Fast floaty horns intro, very classical-influenced. Breaks into fast jazzy passages with Liebig playing some cool jazzy lines on contrabass guitar.

4- with NELS CLINE, GUITAR: Opens with a serious mood followed by a total electric freak out!
