Elizabeth Elmore (ex-Sarge) does it again. Take Sarge’s sound (think: punky, fed-up girl pop) and multiply it by a couple extra years on the road and a full, loud rock sound. This is indie pop-rock done the right way. The usual suspects of bad relationships, useless friends, and alcohol all find their way in. Polished, catchy, and all around good. This is an album should have been released in 1998 and climbed its way up the college charts, but still manages to sound fresh and refreshingly different from modern rock. Elizabeth’s voice has less of the girlie, perky sound it had in Sarge and more of a woman’s growl and bite and still comes out swaggering. Meanwhile, the rest of the band is rockin’, too. My picks: 1, 2, 4, 6, 8; FCC: 4, 6
1. Rolling, driving sound, uptempo. Full rock band sound but a bit restrained.
2. Brighter guitars, a bit wistful, mid to up tempo.
3. Angrier, louder, more of the punk influence. Fast, driving, uptempo.
4. Bitter sounding vocals and guitars, midtempo, back and forth. Piano backing.
6. The radio hit. Easygoing, but still emotive. Midtempo, vocals more womanly. Great pop song. But, FCC on the word “shit.”
7. Piano and vocal-led ballad. Downtempo. Pretty.
8. Fast, upbeat, percussion and bass driven.
10. Plaintive cover of Elvis Costello song. Jazzy feel, with piano and vocals.
