Soul Sister Funk. This album features hard, hard funk with sassy soul sister vocals from a former gospel singer Sharon Jones. She begs, she screams, she yells, and she testifies backed up by the MGs/Mar-Keys style Daptone house band, the Dap-Kings. The sound is very much late 60s hard southern funk (Stax/James Brown), although this is a new recording--not a reissue of old stuff. This is the first release from Daptone Records, the new label put together by Gabriel Roth (one of the co-founders of the legendary Desco label) & Neal Sugarman (of the Sugarman Three). I have been waiting for this to come out for months and I have not been disappointed. Needless to say, all tracks are highly recommended. I would suggest starting with tracks 3, 8, or 9 as these are my favorites but there is not a bad track on here so play them all.
1) James Brown style spoken intro
2) Bouncy up-tempo funk
3)* Sassy cover of Janet Jackson song, with hard funky guitar and horns
4) Spoken intro, mid-tempo dance number
5) Driving, beggin' funk
6) Unlisted track, possibly called "Cut That Line"? Groovin' Funk
7) Syncopated funk, strong vocals.
8)* DAAAAAAMNN! Sweet soul ballad. If lovin' this song is wrong, I don't want to be right.
9)* Mid-tempo with powerful afro-groove horns
10) JB flavored party funk with a harder electric wa-wa sound
11) Hidden track, doesn't start until -2:59. Instrumental
