A showcase of Tim Berne's compositions, in three contexts: Saxophone quartet (1), solo acoustic guitar (2,6) and David Torn's electronic reprocessing of either of those (3, 5). Berne himself plays on only one track (4), a 25-minute tour de force that combines all three elements.
Fairly serious throughout, although Berne's writing style leads toward catchy-but-complex odd-time rhythms that keep it fun.
1*- Slow, swaying sax quartet with complex layers of sound. Light mood.
2- Solo guitar, slow/twangy/acrid
3- Electronic manipulations of 1, with guitar added
4**- The 25-minute centerpiece, a sax-heavy piece peppered with jumpy, tangly themes. Includes some lively, athletic soloing from Berne.
5- Electronic reprocessing of 2, with extra guitar added
6- Solo guitar, fast and pretty.
