India: Sitar to Bollywood, the Rough Guide to the Music of India

A compilation of music that claims to represent the vast variety of music from the Indian subcontinent. The artists include India’s most celebrated and the compilation has representatives of Hindustani and Carnatic classical music, devotional music, folk music, a local brass band (that plays at Indian weddings amongst other occasions) as well as Hindi film music. All the tracks detailed below are highly recommended!

Track 3: Carnatic (South Indian classical) music is represented by the Chitra Vina (stick zither). A devotional composition, accompanied by the violin and a 2 headed drum (mridangam).

Track 4: A beautiful rendering of the raga Desh on the Mohan Veena (think of a modified Spanish guitar used to play Hindustani classical music).

Track 6: A folk song lullaby with Zakir on the tabla and vocals as well as the Sarangi.

Track 7: Rhythm as melody . If you’ve heard the tabla (an Indian percussion instrument) played before you’ll be surprised by the waves of sound in this track. It features a half-ring of 10 to 16 tablas played at the same time, its called a tabla tarang (tarang = wave).

Track 13: Represents Bollywood as India’s Hindi film industry is popularly known. Haunting melody, film music from the 50-60’s.
