[coll]: ROUGH GUIDE TO THE MUSIC OF THE HIMALAYAS
World Music Network, 2002
Music from Tibet, India, Nepal, Bhutan, and China round out this chant-heavy set from the Rough Guide folks. Quality stuff, as always.
Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 6, 8, 10, 13
1. 2:15 – haunting fem vox (chanting nun) over synth tones, some percussion
2. 6:44 – lilting Indian classical piece from Kashmir: guitar, santur, and bamboo flute
3. 3:58 – Nepalese brass band with cool percussion, reminiscent of klezmer!
4. 4:21 – more chanting nuns, this time without effects: quick-flowing and hypnotic
5. 3:09 – atmospheric and bluesy guitar/effects, plus… you guessed it, a chanting nun!
6. 6:56 – monks this time, deep deep deep throat intonations and churning chants
7. 9:59 – Bill Laswell stuff: field recordings of chants & horns in a swirling, murky soup
8. 3:41 – solo lingbu wooden flute, high-pitched and warbling; very pretty
9. 3:51 – duet: quick frame drumming and a blaring shawm pipe
10. 3:27 – Male singer with yangchen dulcimer, song for the black-necked crane
11. 3:39 – very lo-fi field recording of a Nepalese percussion ensemble
13. 7:12 – Chinese flute (and Japanese percussion), a beautiful and lonely piece
