LA MUSICA DELLA MAFIA
Fascinating CD. Italian folks songs in the Mafia tradition. This CD (banned in Italy) features songs usually only played during initiation ceremonies or to celebrate the release from prison of a member of the Calabrian Mafia. The songs sound like typical Italian folk songs, until you read the lyrics. (“First, traitor, I’ll slash your face and watch you die.” “While the sawn-off shotgun sings, the traitor screams and dies.”) It’s retribution, vengeance, etc set to music that at times sounds very similar to the Mexican folk tradition. It’s hard to separate the words from the songs themselves in terms of suggesting what to play. Since I don’t speak Italian, I’m just going on how they sound.
*1 & 2. Spoken word intro to mid-tempo guitar/vox/accordion.
3. Mid-tempo strings/vox.
4. High male vocals, almost bouncy guitar.
5 & 6. Spoken word intro to accordion/vox/strings mid-tempo.
*7. Fast folk dance w/spoken word story. Cool.
8 & 9. Spoken word intro to fast instrumental dance.
*10. Nice strings/vocals.Mid-tempo.
*11 &12. Spoken word intro happy-sounding song of vengeance.
13. Slower w/emotional male vox/guitar.
14. Slow w/strings and melancholy vocals.
15. Downtempo & melodic w/accordion/strings/vox.
*16. Cool old-sounding tarentella w/wailing vox.
17. Soaring vox/strings/slow.
18. Slow & melodic string/vox/accordion.
*19 & 20. A toast is made then a bouncy little folk tale.
*21 & 22. Spoken word intro to some nice strings & sweet vox.
23. Folk strings, spoken word, nostalgic vocals.
24. Slow and tragic.
