GALINA DURMUSHLIYSKA - "Enchanting Voice of Bulgaria"
Arc Music, 2002
Galina is a MAJOR star in her native Bulgaria, known as "the voice of Dobrudzha," after the region of her birth and the source of most of her songs. Most of these songs involve beautiful village maidens and their many suitors. Her delivery is a bit nasal, and I don't always feel the full emotional weight of the songs, but she has excellent control. The Bulgarian National Radio Orchestra and Bulgarian National Folk Orchestra provide a wonderful backdrop, along with two star kaval (flute) players. Extensive liner notes included. This album really grew on me once I gave it a chance.
Try any track! ( Fo's Picks: 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 13, 17 )
01. slow, patient, with some tension
02. airy ruchenitsa dance rhythm
03. serious music, intertwined layers
04. upbeat; about snow in summer
05. slow, ponderous
06. light bounce, great violins & pipes
07. sad, drawn-out duet for voice & flute
08. slow and touching, quiet orchestra
09. surging, pulsing dance rhythm
10. slow, dreamlike, with spooky flute
11. slow start, but 2nd half is perky
12. solo: a work song, slow & steady
13. stark, windblown: voice + 3 flutes
14. dramatic, about the loss of youth
15. happy sounding but very repetitive
16. slow, sleepy; odd key changes
17. old-fashioned; w/low-range tooting
18. another slow, dramatic piece
