[coll]: ROUGH GUIDE TO THE MUSIC OF RUSSIA
World Music Network, 2002
There are now more than 75 titles in the Rough Guide series, which in my opinion has eclipsed Putumayo as the best of the world music sampler labels. Their secrets of success: 1) CDs packed with music; 2) just enough info in the liner notes; 3) an emphasis on variety and fun; 4) they surprise the listener at least once per set.
This disc focuses on "bard," a folksy genre of mostly upbeat music built around serious poetry. If you like Paolo Conte, bossa nova, Tom Waits, or anything French, check out bard music!
Fo's Picks: 1, 4, 5, 6, 8, 12, 13, 18, 19
01. Soviet-era story; gruff voice, bouncy & silly
02. folksy pop about a disturbed man
03. updated folk song: Cossacks vs. Bolsheviks
04. lonely old Gypsy song: good fiddle & vocals
05. major hit from the 1970s, and majorly weird
06. husband-wife (?) bard duo, like a bossanova
07. solo voice & fine classical guitar
08. very nice fem voice & subtle backing
09. an ode to Paris; nice Russo-musette fusion
10. another updated Cossack song
11. bouncy music-hall song with a Jewish touch
12. large group sings the best known bard song
13. jazzy '40s movie song about WWII; cool!
14. Stalin's favorite singer, a Marlene Dietrich-y waltz
15. speedy gypsy wedding song; fem trio vox
16. American artist, a sad soldier's folk song
17. Soviet-era light-rock band, very '70s sound
18. Bluegrass! Really! And it ain't bad, either...
19. traditional instrumental quartet, very nice
