EDDIE "CLEANHEAD" VINSON & THE CANNONBALL ADDERLEY QUINTET
"Cleanhead & Cannonball" Milestone, 1962 / 2002
Is it blues or jazz? Who cares, it's great! In this expanded re-release of an album originally called Back Door Blues, alto sax man Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson turns in a strong vocal set of classic, postwar-style blues shouting, absolutely dripping with soul. While it's mostly a straight blues date, the instrumentals have that sophisticated yet funky hardbop sound that was the Adderley brothers' trademark. Outstanding material.
Fo's Picks: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 11
1. Joe Williams style, smooth walking
2. rockin', churchy; creamy trumpet solo
3. rollin' jump blues; vocal/sax dialogue
4. instrumental: soulful urban bop
5. straight up shoutin', everybody solos
6. low-down, relaxed, band is smooooth!
7. real nice trumpet & sax, fun lyrics
8. soul-drenched Bill Broonzy classic
9. Billy Eckstine style ballad, big vocal
10. instrumental: fast bebop
11. instrumental: hipster bop theme
12. instrumental: smooth cocktail bop
