Black & Proud Vol. 2
The Soul of the Black Panther Era
Funk and soul. Although this collection contains some great socially conscious songs calling for change and justice, few if any are actually about the Black Panthers themselves. That said, there are several classic songs on here, and the liner notes do have a brief history of the Black Panthers (in German and English) if you need a little history. For your education and uplift check out tracks 2, 6, 10, 12, 14, 7, 9, 13, and 16
1) Orchestral soul ballad
2) **Live recording, funky gospel over sparse but nice piano and percussion accompaniment
3) Reggae song about Malcolm X
4) Funky New Orleans soul jazz
5) Slow political rap over sparse jazzy break. FCC: a couple of "Shit"s
6) **Super groovy soul jazz instrumental after Jesse Jackson spoken intro (sampled by Tribe Called Quest)
7) *Spoken intro into mid-tempo funk rock
8) Reggae cover of Billy Paul soul song
9) *Groovin' mid-tempo funky soul
10) **Mellow and groovy funk
11) Slow and jazzy with female vocals
12) **Mid-tempo groove from a group with a gospel pedigree, groomed for funk by Stax records
13) *Philly soul
14) **Good Funk (need I say more?)
15) Blues-y gospel. Great song, although this version is a little lighter then the original Nina Simone version, which I think weakens the impact a bit.
16) *Classic Gil Scott-Heron mid-tempo soul
17) Spoken Word/Rap over pretty weak loop. FCC: "Shit" "Fuck"s
18) Dance-y loop with female spoken samples.
