Ramona the Pest - Contrary Sanctuary
East-bay punk/popsters at times reminiscent of the Pixies/Breeders or PJ Harvey. Catchy guitar riffs, power bass lines, slight surf-rock influences. Quite varied and good - songs range from folky slow ballads, punky power pop to covers of children's songs. Fronted by Valerie Esway, whose vocal range is quite impressive, from dark angst to a singsong quality. Picks: 2, 9, 5, 11, 13,
1. heavy repeated guitar riffs, anti-consumerism, phone operator sample
2. driving rocker - somewhat surfy - high school tale
3. Pixies bass line + voice - about having a bad day
4. slow/mid - vocals with drum, percussion sounds
5. folk/country influences - ballad
6. classic lullaby with a toy piano
7. Pixies cover - slow, moaning guitars, different spin with female vocals
8. big guitar riffs - pop melody
9. version of "itsy bitsy spider" - good guitar solo in the middle + finger snaps!
10. somewhat springsteen-esque
11. slow acoustic ballad - guitar + accordion
12. big bass lines
13. slow/mid - slow guitar, then feedbacky
