[coll]: LEGENDS OF CALYPSO
Arc Music, 2002
This is a charming collection of tracks from the golden age of Calypso, before it was derailed by cheesy renditions of "Day-O" and eventually replaced by reggae as the sound of the Caribbean. The recordings are culled from the 1940s and '50s, so the sound is just a bit muddy. The songs bear all the trademarks of calypso: sly humor, sexual commentary, a perky beat, and a folksy/jazzy vibe. This is a fine introduction to a neglected, but really fun, form of music. Play any track!
Fo's Picks: 2, 3, 4, 7, 9, 16, 19
1. lazy air, just a guy & his guitar
2. man assaults woman, she goes to jail
3. a classic lightweight ditty
4. upbeat and silly fun, very catchy
7. the most famous song of all, fast
8. another fun one you might recognize
9. jazzy, with very odd Carnival lyrics
10. a very naughty reincarnation song...
14. Eek! Rats! Rats everywhere!
15. a dirty classic (don’t touch her tomato, get it?)
16. very nice solo voice/guitar, relaxed
19. I have no clue what this is. But it sounds great!
20. upbeat, a classic-style "story song"
22. unusual, fast & jazzy; almost a rhumba
23. simple call & response, but catchy
24. another dirty classic (big bamboo, get it?)
