P'Taah: Staring at the Sun Label: Ubiquity
Well, we almost didn't get this CD. I got in touch w/ the folks at Ubiquity, and they were kind enough to send a copy over. What a nice CD! Local producer P'Taah has been making his own unique brand of abstract broken-beat electronic dance music. The first half of the CD is very uptempo dance-y, while the second half is more downtempo. Take your pick, lots of good stuff here. Try: 2,3,4,11,12,13,14.
1. Interlude, space-y pretty tinkly sounds
2. Snappy 2-step beat, mellow synths, dope Rhodes, catchy vocal melody
3. Funky! Catchy vocals, bad-ass organ jam, killer broken-beat groove
4. Broken-beat, claps, mellow synths, vocal samples, bad-ass Rhodes
5. R&B soul track, big slow beats & male R&B vocals, on the mellow tip
6. Space-y interlude w/ tinkly effects
7. Snappy broken-beat/2-step funk, instrumental; w/ some nice organ play
8. Kinda acid-jazz-y/lounge-y w/ smooth sax improv & mellow synths
9. Cheery synth loops, fluffy beats, melodic & kinda nice
10. Ambient interlude
11. Slow & mellow downtempo jazz piece, w/ synths & distant vocals
12. Another mellow downtempo piece, meandering synths, relaxed
13. Ambient/downtempo - long lush synths, then some slow beats kick in
14. Snappy broken-beat (almost like D&B), lush synths, pretty cool
