Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend
Reviewed 2003-06-05
Local, East Bay grimey garage punk. Sticker says “psychobilly”; I can see that but I wouldn’t pidgeonhole them such. I’d say more like if Iggy and the Stooges lived in the trailer in that scene from John Waters’ flick “cry baby” where Iggy played Johnny Depp’s crazy uncle; classic scene, Iggy Pop bathing in a galvanized wash bucket….what the fuck am I talking about!?!?!? I guess what I am saying is that this music conjures up lots of great irreverent dirty images to me. I love this cd: the lyrics are super antisocial (but not stupid mall-rat dissatisfaction). The music is dirty as hell, rocks like a motherfucker, with a guitar sound that’s got about as perfect a distortion tone as I’ve ever heard. This is great stuff, all tracks rule!

1) FCC “full of shit” plus “asshole” in ending sample
2) upbeat swingy cowpunk
3) drug addled sample (movie excerpt?)
4) epic rocker with great antisocial lyrics, so epic I looked to see if this was a Stooges or MC5 cover
5) slower smarmier, more antisocial stuff, great
6) beautiful fuzzy rock, great hip grinding rhythm, kick ass sample “I got scabies”, all about STDs
7) looping noise intro to next
8) basic rocker
9) spoken word, prose, depressing stuff
10) upbeat driving rock
11) more disease refs, clean guit, vocs intro, launches into grungey punk 2/4 upbeat feel
12) okay this is “psychobilly”
13) cover of Cash classic, cowpunk’ola
14) live low fi garage psych instrumental jam followed by more spoken word prose, strange, sounds like something chief or Theresa would play
