PAOLO CONTE - "Reveries"
Nonesuch, 2003
Paolo Conte is one of the great songwriters of our time. Now almost 70 years old and a lifelong resident of his hometown (Asti, in the Piedmont region of Italy), he is often compared to Tom Waits. Yes, both have craggy voices and strong jazz leanings, but Conte's music is as clearly European in derivation and outlook as Waits' is American.
Anyway, what we have here is a gorgeous collection of world-weary ballads and jazzy romps with poetic lyrics, all of which will stick in your memory. Highly recommended!
Fo's Picks: 1, 3, 5, 6, 9, 12, 15
1. 3:49 – reflective & poetic, in French
2. 4:20 – romantic reminiscence, subtle
3. 3:58 – quick growl, w/ 3 saxes + scatting
4. 4:03 – latin feel w/ synth; gruff vocal
5. 6:50 – cool saunter, gets under the skin
6. 3:30 – spooky ballad w/ synth, kazoo!
7. 4:01 – large band, drunk musette-tango
8. 4:33 – melancholy ballad, touching
9. 3:56 – nice piano intro, then sweet tango
10. 3:32 – churning waltz: timeless, quirky
11. 5:59 – somber ballad, nice trombone
12. 3:01 – quick rumba, cinematic feel
13. 3:26 – romantic, but jaded or ironic
14. 2:54 – alley music: repetitive & sneaky
15. 6:13 – fast Italo-jewish-cowboy thing
16. 4:23 – plodding, English backing vox
