This is the second album from these folky indie rockers from Chicago consisting of gentle acoustic guitar, touches of electronic noodling, and sweet vocal duets strongly pointing to the Beatles. They would have fit right into the Elephant 6 group. There are some great songs here, not terribly original, but great songs nevertheless. Without crossing too many lines and successfully avoiding any dull uniformity, they manage to maintain a positive, mellow tone throughout the album. Great! Think also of Holopaw. 6, 9, 7, 10, 5.
1. mellow, southern feel. with xylophone and a tad of drum machine.
2. catchy, vaguely apples in stereo. breaks out into a great texture.
3. beautiful, sad duet with organ. first part is better than rest of song.
4. alt-country band, mellow but impassioned vocals.
5. slow with piano, cool string arrangement, organ, then vocals la la.
6. catchy, mellow alt-country with synth samples and drum machine.
7. slow and really sad, just vocals, guitar, and piano
8. midtempo and sweet, spacey at the end.
9. nice fingerpicking and counterpoint between guitars. banjo comes.
10. upbeat, poppiest song on the album. cute, funny chorus:
“When you love somebody, bite your tongue - all you get is a mouthful of blood.”
