[COLL]: As Far As: DJ Cheb I Sabbah
Label: Six Degrees
We've had previous albums by Cheb I Sabbah, but we've not had a mix-CD by him that showcases his DJ-ing talents until now. This is probably most representative of a typical DJ set he would do in a basement nightclub in San Francisco, or anywhere. In that respect, this is an impressive selection of exotic world-music/electronica that is psychedelic, hypnotic, and dance-able (mostly). There is a very strong dub and drum&bass influence in his DJ-ing style. A few of the tracks are his own works, but for the most part, the tracks are from other places, other worlds. And that's what's so great about this mix-CD. Try: 1,3,5,9.
1. Space-y synths, spacey vocals, deep dubby bass & tablas percussion
2. Fem vocal wailing, starts kinda mellow & gets kind of breakbeat-y
3. Total dub. Complete w/ exotic samples, spoke word about global issues
4. Very space-y, beautiful flute, distant drones, then some slow beats
5. A distant woodwind sound, complex percussion, dub-breakbeat
6. Lush synths, exotic samples, snare-drum pounding, beautiful Asian string melodies
7. Big dub bassline, fem vocal in French but w/ Mid. Eastern melody
8. Vibrant Mid. Eastern song, chorus of male chants, drops into French hip-hop
9. Jungle beats, exotic male vocals, swirling synths
10. Great stuff - lush synths, vibrant vocals, complex percussion
11. African-ized funk - vibrant male vocals chanting in unison
12. Pounding percussion, female vocal chanting
13. Exotic saxophone melody - Inidan percussion - awesome track
14. Indian chanting, sparse instrumentation, very traditional sound
