Vintage recordings of interviews with and essays by surrealist artists. Some of the interviews focus on historical events – meetings, exhibitions, etc. – while others focus on the artistic methods, meaning of “art”, and more abstract topics. Some of the pieces are in English, some in French. For the French, translations are printed in the booklet. There are also some musical selections.
French: 6, 7 (questions in English, reponses en français), 11, 13, 14, 15
Stories: 10, 11 (description of a dream), 12
Essays/ideas: 2, 3, 5, 8, 12, 14, 15
Music: 1, 4, 13 (a poem, actually)
3. What is the relationship between artist, art, and spectator?
5. Why art created in revolting times is naturally revolutionary
6 and 7. Dada vs. surrealism
8. Dali’s “paranoiac-critical method”; the mind is encouraged to see something other than what the eyes report
9. Man Ray on craftsmen vs. dreamers.
10.A radio interview (real?) with Lee Miller, a photographer/artist and Roland Penrose, the man who introduced surrealism to England
15.Artaud talking about the relationship between lunatic asylums and death
