If you like John Fahey but don’t care for the blues, you will enjoy this album. On the other hand, blues lovers will too. What I’m saying is that this is an album of finger-picked, folk guitar with a hint of out-ness and influences from near and far – classical guitar, flamenco, country, North African, and others. Some percussion enhances a couple of the tracks but for the most part, it’s interesting compositions sparsely arranged and well played. Most tracks are short. All are very good. Highly recommended.
1. Percussive
2. Somber
3. Harpsichord-evoking
4. Dead Can Dance-like troubadour style
5. Tender
6. Upbeat and embellished by tinkly bells
7. Forceful but also sparse
8. Hesitant, questioning patterns
9. Medieval counterpoint-influenced
10. Yow – fast, precise picking, swirling melody; a relative barn-burner
11. Despite the title, dark and menacing
12. Abstract melody punctuated by finger cymbals tinkling
13. Slow, deliberate march in a middle-eastern tone
14. Similar to the opening of the suite, track 10; complex and beautiful
15. Buzzing, sliding steel guitar on a slow, meandering tune
16. More direct attack on the steel guitar for this assertive and faster tune
17. The word “sinuous” in the title is appropriate for the melody
18. Two-guitars play intertwining patterns for a dance piece
19. A simple not-very-obvious waltz
