It’s Fu Manchu, foo, the SoCal boogie rockers in front of an audience, playing the wankiest guitar solos, the biggest drum solos, and just generally exercising/exorcising their 70s tendencies, including a cover of a song by boogie rock demigods Blue Oyster Cult (no cowbells, though). What else can one say – regardless of the tempo, the tunes are energetic (more energetic than the limp crowds, as indicated by the scattered applause they barely rouse themselves to produce) and hook you like the best classic rock does. Play almost any of these with confidence of ultimate boogie power. And get a load of the face-scrunching power grimaces in the booklet.
CD 1
1. Fast
2. Staccato power chording
3. Driving anthem
4. More complex than the typical Fu Manchu riff but still a ways from King Crimson
5. Fast skating anthem
6. Slow tune waxing poetic about van conversions and “moving on down the line”
7. Picks up the speed with wah-wah-wow
8. Slow but powerfully riffing
9. Strutting boogie
10. Another ode to driving
11. Precise riff giving way to requisite thunderous drum solo and then a cathartic power-chording conclusion
CD 2
1. How can you miss with a title like “Evil Eye” and dueling lead guitars?
2. Fast
3. Nondescript older tune
4. Faster, almost punkish energy
5. Chunks of rhythm guitar
6. The bassist steps out, not for a solo exactly, but a little gtr-bs duet
7. Molasses-speed cover of BOC’s “Godzilla”
8. Yeah, burning rubber, riding with lady luck, close to the line, and other 70s clichés
9. Hey, Beavis, “Weird Beard” rhymes, heh-heh, but this tune sucks MY weird beard
10. Back to the head-banging boogie tunes
11. Is it the same song that closed CD 1? If not, similar to it
