Sax/trumpet duets, free-jazz jams based on compositions (really more like *constructions* for improvisation). Abstract feel with lots of energy and plenty of "extended" playing.
Tracks shift from slow and thoughtful playing to blazing duels. The fast parts are fun, but pay attention to the quieter parts, too, because that's where most of the dialogue takes place.
These guys have been around forever but only played together a few times, all of them in Chicago in the '60s. The result is a nice document of two masters comparing notes, tossing ideas back and forth.
Smith composed #1 and 4; Braxton's tracks are #2 and 3.
1*- Spritely conversation with lots of pauses
2- Relaxed, thoughtful start. Lots of "white space," but also includes some blazing fast phases. Ends with slow reverent playing; this track has the most variety of the four.
3*- Mid/fast, builds speed quickly.
4- Fast quiet burble, leading into some quiet, sparse phases.
