Kid Koala - Some of My Best Friends are DJs
Post-Hip-Hop excursions in turntablism. I think that Dan the Automator said it best when he described Kid Koala as one of the most musical turntablists out there. He has an uncanny ability to create new tones from his scratched records, but he also has excellent percussive timing. He also has a huge and varied collection of spoken word records, which he uses to create odd little narratives in his songs. This is a fabulous little journey into his world, all tracks recommended.
1) Brief Intro
2) *Slow blues with scratched drunken trumpet
3) **Up-tempo funky interlude piano and scratches + vocal samples
4) **Open drum break with incredible scratched harmonica
5) *Spoken intro about stereo, then sparse dark moody
6) Interlude
7) **Up-tempo dub with layers of scratched saxophone
8) *Wow, scratched drum and coughs
9) **Bizarre and wonderful pop funk (FCC "Awww, Shit")
10) *Piano version of "Spinning Wheel" with scratched vocal samples
11) *A couple of sparse loops layered
12) *Odd samples over violin
13) **Discussion of Koala behavior with strange sound effects, with some happy up-tempo piano pop (mild fcc, "funky ass")
14) Lounge-y strings and Hawaiian guitar riff
15) Interlude
