Album Review

Flowery chamber jazz with a bit of a staid, classical air -- it's no accident that the first track is a Ravel composition. Trio of piano, bass, and soprano sax -- the latter giving everything a soft feel. Playful and adventurous, but in a black-tie way, closer to the conservatory than to the jazz lofts.

The trio does some loose, untethered improvising as a group, but most of the pieces start and end with conservative composing. It's "free jazz" in the same sense that the band Oregon is: they break the Rules but stay within particular boundaries of melody and mood.

1- Ravel piece: gentle, soft classical music. The trio launches into a group improv that gets chattery and even a little abstract.
2- Mid/slow stumbling. Gets loose and untethered later.
3- Cool digging little bass groove
4- Old bebop tune made soft. Nice straight-jazz piano solo.
5- Mid/fast. Piping, happy theme that's a bit too sweet.
6- Slow. Starts w/quiet bass solo, gets more swirling
7- Floaty new age. Avoid.
8- Ellington song; swingy freedom
9- Jaunty and showtuney. Gets a bit free but sticks to its main rhythm
