Just as the 1950s and ‘60s saw the confluence of Jazz, Euro-pop, and Brazilian samba, resulting in the development of a new brand of South American music, the last decade has seen the growing influence of hip-hop, techno, and bass music on traditional Brazilian rhythms. *Braz. elect.* is a great showcase of the contemporary sounds that are emerging from the clubs and recording studios of South America. The album features 16 tracks by preeminent innovators of this new genre. Interestingly, while most of the tracks featured have all the hallmarks of abstract electronica (manipulated voices, thunderous bass grooves, sonic sampling…), they are still so obviously Brazilian that you can hardly miss it. Good stuff.
Track 1, Sereia: Husky fem. vox over psychedelic electronic refrain. Percussion switches on and off throughout track.
Track 2, Samba de morro: Party music with breathy female vox. Blend of deep, ambient textures and samba percussion.
Track 3, Samba de uma: Cool techno beat; vox by MPB-legend Claudia Telles. Is that dogs woofing in the background?
**Track 4, Juntando coco: Drums and shakers take center-stage in this one. More traditional sound. Fem. choir repeats lines sung by lead singer with nice child/woman voice.
Track 7, Caminho: Stretched male vox. over clanking cymbals and sirens.
Track 8, E que a vida e: Fast fem. vox over noisy, electronic background.
Track 9, Stylish: Lounge music. Interesting, gentle synthetic sounds. Purely instrumental.
**Track 10, Samba de gringo: Energetic electronic percussion fused with traditional Braz. dance rhythms. Fem. choir repeating single phrase.
**Track 11, Bossa Nova, ne?: Purely instrumental.
Track 12, Mulata Assanhada: Male narration and female vox
Track 13, Ohhh!: Starts with gentle electronic riffs. Then the resonating bass that nearly blew the doors off my car. Indistinct fem. vox.
Track 14, Samba de dez linhas: Electronic mangue-folk.
Track 15, Loop B: Jazz percussion.
**Track 16, O sertao: Male vox 1:30 into the track. Interesting flute interlude at 3:30.
