This disc disappeared for a while, but now it's back...
TOMMY McCOOK – “Blazing Horns/Tenor in Roots”
Blood & Fire, 2003
Horn-based reggae instrumentals. This disc reissues two late-70s albums by Skatalites co-founder McCook (he plays tenor sax, and Bobby Ellis’ trumpet gets some space on tracks 1-10), along with some previously rare 12” mixes. These tunes have good grooves, but tend to say their piece pretty quickly, so I don’t necessarily recommend the longer tracks. The shorter pieces will fit well in any reggae or funky set. There's some good stuff lurking in here.
Fo’s picks: 2, 3, 5, 8, 14, 20, maybe 15
2. perky & cute
3. medium roots vibe
5. nice vibe & sax solo
8. slow mystery-ska
14. upbeat theme, raw
15. odd smoky soul stroll
20. mellow sax soloing
