GREAT!!! This is some very interesting indie pop from Los Angeles’ Young People. Take an indie pop guitarist who wants to do quirky but accessible experiments and add a sultry sometimes country female singer and you get something fresh, fun, and familiar. The overarching influence I hear as far as their asymmetric songwriting structure is none other than Beat Happening. Then add within that structure the wonderful textures, moods, and moments of such greats as Helium, The Breeders, Cat Power. In the end, I can’t say it completely comes together for me, but there are definitely great moments that they leave you craving more of. Eat it up! 4, 5, 6, 8, 11, 2.
1. slow 6/8 w/ noisy guitars, great mood, questionable vocal melody
2. minimal built off bass and sing-songy vocals, repeated chorus
3. indie pop w/ quirky reverbed guitar, some out of tune singing
4. moody guitar & voice, ride cymbal drums, changes uptempo pop
5. MBV echoey noise guitar, jerky repeated tom rhythm
6. upbeat indie pop, i hear beat happening, this is for Eric K
7. vox only lullaby w/ some quiet ambient percussion noises
8. nice noise guitar texture over melodic vox, breeders rock at end
9. toms and country vocals
10. slow, very much helium, then disintegrates, then picks up strangely
11. distorted guitar lead over acoustic guitar, then rocks out funk style, saxophone doo-op!
