KIM NALLEY – “Need My Sugar”
CE Jazz & Blues, 2002
Ooooh, yummy! Local treasure Kim Nalley (co-owner of Jazz at Pearl’s in North Beach) offers up nine sexy, sassy takes on classic blues and jazz standards. She’s backed by a trio of local jazz stalwarts (Dave Mathews on piano gets a good amount of space and uses it well).
Fo’s picks: 2, 4, 5, 9
1. 3:19 – straight-up jazz vocal, lightly swinging tempo, piano solo
2. 5:34 – delicious, drawn-out r&b; think of cocktails and bearskin rugs
3. 3:35 – dinner-club jazz: slightly sassy vocal, even-toned backing
4. 6:10 – slow and haunting, with a latin tinge. Vocals and trio all great!
5. 2:47 – rollicking barrelhouse boogie, original tune in a classic style
6. 3:03 – slow-dance tempo, a really nice (and subtly sexy) ballad
7. 2:55 – frisky swing, feels a bit rushed, but well-phrased vocals
8. 4:09 – medium walking blues, extra-sassy vocal and good piano solo
9. 6:30 – breezy, upbeat take on the 60’s r&b hit, swings just right
