Dufus -- 1:3:1
Weird weird pop/anti-folk/outside -- the anti-folk movement has been around for quite awhile, combining weird folk music with punk subversiveness, following the footsteps of Zappa and Captain Beefheart The results have been quite varied, and some groups such as the Moldy Peaches, Beck and Ween attained some popularity. But this album by Dufus (20 members, led by Seth Quankmeyer Faergolzia) must represent some sort of landmark in the genre A chaos of instruments, many voices sung and chanted, dissonant folky pop melodies, big metal riffs -- at once irritating and fascinating. Lyrics also have this craziness/brilliance quality. Most definitely adventurous, surely weirder than Zappa. A masterpiece in non-conformity
PICS: 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 11 FCC: 1, 3, 13
1. strange chanting then chaos of instruments, goofy voices, FCC: "fuck"
2. more conventional song structure -- reminds me of ween
3. big bass + discordant violins, scary voices, driving rhythm FCC: "asshole"
4. starts with long sample -- the zappa-esque vocals
5. discordant instruments, making fun of sports, slows down at end -- great!
6. short (:31), strange echoing vocals
7. slow, high-pitched vocals, lots of weird voices, evolves into bleeping at end
8. more conventional song, violin, epic style -- great!
9. slower, distorted lyrics, reggae beat
10. guttural growling mixed with ethereal female singing, chanting, weird
11. people chanting "yes" and "no", ska beat
12. chanting, goofy spoken advertisement
13. people chanting "noise", then rock with more weird lyrics -- FCC- "bullshit"
14. weird orchestra, jumble of instruments, goofy lyrics --good
