DAN SARTAIN RULES MY WORLD!!! Dan Sartain channels raw 1950s-style rhythm'n'blues (Bo Diddley), country-blues (Johnny Cash) and rockabilly (Eddie Cochran) through a 1960s grimy lo-fi garage surf sound and with a late 1970s post-punk angst (note the suicidal noose hanging above his head like a modern Ian Curtis). This is truly where Johnny Cash meets Ian Curtis. Sartain's music is raw, visceral and moving. It will drown you in 200 proof emotion. Think powerful sentimental melodies; raw and edgy. Dan Sartain is on the edge of power pop, rockabilly, garage-punk, surf, rhythm'n'blues. Think anything from Bob Dylan to Les Savy Fav, from Cash to the Cramps, from Reverend Horton Heat to Joy Division. From his garage in Birmingham, Alabama and with his grandpa playing the organ, Dan Sartain rules over any San Francisco pansy-ass trendy hipster bullshit band. GO DAN!!!
Play: ALL GOOD... but try 9, 5, 4, 10, 12, 13, 6, 3.
1. Power-rawk, borderline pop-punk. Punchy!
2. This makes me so happy that I wanna dance. Synth noise, catchy riff, edgy guitars and vocals.
3. Dreamy power pop. Nice melodies and percussion.
4. Incredibly raw, smoky, and rockabilly-fueled number.
5. Fast, bouncy, edgy bitter-sad, sentimental. Passionate "go" screams at the end. Rawks!
6. Sad and depressing blues organ/guitar lines - think Bob Dylan's Love and Theft. "You don't know how it feels like being alone...".
7. Grey... very dark and depressing country-blues number. Hear this voice? Johnny Cash's spirit is alive.
8. Uptempo power pop number. Nice noisy sound effects. Kind like the Strokes meet the Oranges Band.
9. Noisy indie punk-rockish. Reminds me of Les Savy Fav's style and lyrical attitude. Rawks!
10. Rockabilly drum beats and tempo meet surf guitars and noisy organ. A seminal sound.
11. Surfy garage number. A swinging/marching tempo. Electroclashy sound effects.
12. This sentimental acoustic ballad makes me wanna cry. Beautifully haunting organ. This could just easily be a Greek tune done by Paulos Sidiropoulos.
13. Urban 1950s rhythm'n'blues number delivered through a very strange low-fi, noisy and somewhat angular post-punk sound.
14. Slurry blues number. Very depressing and melancholic. Again... it makes me think of Greek rembetika. Nice brass tones.
