[coll]: WORLD OF GYPSIES, VOL. 3
Arc Music, 2004
As advertised, here’s a collection of music from a wide range of Gypsy communities, stretching from Morocco to Russia. Quite varied, but with an emphasis on jazzy stuff. Some of this has already been through the A-File (1, 3, 6), but those tracks are worth a second listen. Mostly excellent stuff.
Fo’s picks: 1, 2, 5, 7, 8, 9, 11
1. 4:34 – Romania: uptempo brass band w/infectious beat, hot solos
2. 4:44 – Hungary: very folksy, nice with great backing vox, speeds up!
3. 7:55 – Russia: strong violins/accordion; jazzy medley of familiar tunes
4. 4:38 – Spain: smooth-jazz/flamenco hybrid. Highly talented drivel.
5. 7:48 – Morocco: mid/uptempo, steady bounce, call/response vocal
6. 5:45 – Serbia: live brass band; slow, a bit sad, fine trumpet+clarinet
7. 6:02 – Wallachia: whee! crazy-fast violin & cymbalom, nice fem vocal
8. 5:10 – Germany: happy swing instrumental; great café music
9. 4:18 – Bulgaria: husky/reedy male vox, good rhythm & clarinet solo
10. 4:50 – France: straightahead jazz guitar + piano, blues-based bop
11. 3:45 – Germany: upbeat violin-led swing, light and airy
