Album Review
Captain Dee
Reviewed 2004-05-08
Female vocals over twangy guitar, slow beats, often with piano and cello. This sounds surprisingly like a slightly jazzier Sarah McLaughlin. Imagine alternative pop with shades of classical and jazz influences.

Often, the songs are not explicitly major or minor sounding – as if they were written in another mode. And the singing always sounds contained (never too emotional). In this sense, the album comes off as "cinematic," as the liner notes proclaim. This strikes me as decent music for a rainy afternoon.

Track by track inside. No one track is particularly memorable, but I thought 2, 5, 6 maintain the most unity.

- Captain Dee (Doug)

1. Opens with eerie background vocals and electronic sounds. After a minute, breaks into a sexy Latin-ish beat, with shmoozy strings and piano. There’s an interlude of piano, quiet chimes, and duet.
*2. Lazy lounge piano, slow, steady beat. Strings come in and add fullness to the sound. A second beat comes in, gives a more uptempo feel. Vocals sound matter-of-fact.
3. Quiet beginning, wistful vocals over chiming keyboard/vibraphone type notes. Lush strings come in, slow beat. Slow guitar strumming adds to the sad atmosphere.
4. Echo-y, distanced vocals over staccato guitar. Hard beat, strings and electric guitars come in. An odd mix, for sure.
*5. Thoughtful, slow beat and quiet pulse of guitar. Echo-y vocals. Strong, prominent cello comes in. Atmospheric.
*6. Starts with deep cello and meandering vocals. Erupts into uptempo, free singing, guitar plucks and fun strings. Great music for a rainy day.
7. Loungy beat, vocals, and feel. Vocals seem oddly placed at points. Jazzy instrumentals over background strings.
8. Short. Downtempo piano, vocals seem detached. Building crescendo.
9. Sounds like a bossa nova cover. Midtempo, loungy, jazzy. Dramatic strings.
10. Long. Strings, sultry bass. Accordion comes in. Later, weird echoing, ghost-like background vocals. This is fucking weird…. And creepy. Ends in loud, chaotic drums.
11. Same formula here. Quiet opening, guitars and string, lounge beat comes in. You feel like you’ve heard this song before… a few tracks ago.
