[coll]: ROUGH GUIDE TO ITALIA NOVA
World Music Network, 2004
ITALY – The big thing in alternative Italian music these days is to take modern electronica and give it a neo-traditionalist base, using old folk songs and trad instruments. The results are often fantastic, and this Rough Guide pulls together several outstanding tracks. Coming soon to a hipster clothing store near you!
Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 3, 7, 9, 10, 12
1. 4:22 – Sicilian brass band fuses with moody downtempo synths & vox
2. 4:17 – fast tarantella with layered electronics, violin, breathless male vocal
3. 6:32 – funk against war! with rapped lyrics, organ, fuzz guitars, a dulcimer!
5. 5:28 – very fast drum & bass over male folk singing
6. 4:45 – robotic monotone female intro, electro-groove, pretty vocal break
7. 8:02 – Imagine Kraftwerk hanging out in a Balkan café. Add acid jazz. Stir.
9. 5:08 – uptempo: cute bouncy beat, accordions + trumpet, fem vocal
10. 5:02 – bubbly electronics + polyphonic vox from a member of Agricantus
11. 4:18 – male vocal trio, accordions, reggae-ish beat & electronic accents
12. 4:51 – perky folk-funk: male vocal group, bagpipe & beat breaks
13. 7:12 – starts slow; nice folksong w/drum, guitar, trumpet; blossoms at end
