Collection of Dominican groups from NYC. Heavy toward fold tradition, some examples of more modern interpretations. Tracks marked "Salve" are call and response w/ percussion, and are religious in nature. Bachata, Merengue more like modern salsa. Son sounds like Cuban Son. Excellent liner notes. All lyrics in Spanish. Recommend tracks 6, 7, 11.
1) 156 bpm. Merengue. alto sax, male chorus, accordion.
2) 80 bpm. Salve. Elemental, w/ female chorus.
3) 80 bpm. Palos. Similar to above, but with complex percussion
4) 120 bpm. Salve. Male chorus
5) 130 bpm. Salve. female call and response
6) 124 bpm. Salve. Cool talking drums.
7) Medley. Solo guitar. Relaxed feel, but exact, complex rhythms
8) 116 bpm. Son. IMHO, not the best.
9) 128 bpm. Tecno-Bachata. Does not sound like "Techno".
10) Bachata. Bright, tropical guitar, nice swing.
11) 128 bpm. Salve. Talking drums, harmonizing chorus, varied percussion. Recommended.
12) 144 bpm. Bachata. Fast, prominent Tres-like guitar, sounds like a cumbia.
13) 180 bpm. Merengue! Accordion, sax, male vocal.
14) Son. Nice, but a bit out of tune.
