Vaidyanathan plays the hell out of his violin, and he is accompanied here by an able fleet of musicians on a variety of classical percussive instruments such as mridangam (two-sided drum), kanjira (tambourine), and gatham (earthern pot). While this is South Indian classical music at its purest, its beauty and richness will not be lost on anyone with the least trace of hearing.
Track 1: Warmup piece for the musicians. I’m dazzled already.
Track 2: Traditonal devotional raga, redolent with native colors. Fascinating improv starting at 10:30.
Track 3: More festive piece, uptempo and playful
Track 4: Another devotional composition, Brighter and fatser than #2
Track 7: Impatient and entreating as it begins,
then the climax which blew my socks away…
